As a New Yorker are you feeling stressed? Well, you’re not alone.
According to the results of the American Psychological Association (APA)’s Stress in America 2023 survey, 82% of adults aged 18 to 34 are significantly stressed about money and health. Many adults across various age groups also cited relationships as impactful sources of stress.
3 Stress Management Tips:
- Focus on What You Can Control
- Add Small Healthy Habits into Your Routine
- Ask for Help
Focus on What You Can Control
Try making a list of all of the things you are stressed about right now. Separate that list into two categories: (1) Things I can control and (2) Things I can’t control. Focusing on what you can control does not magically remove the stressful things you can’t control. However, doing so narrows things down and allows you to strategize on what you can take action on, which can relieve some of your stress. Examples of things you can control are:
- attitude toward a situation
- spending on non-essential items
- your diet
- your exercise routine
- etc.
Add Small Healthy Habits into Your Routine
If you are stressed about money, you probably can’t stop working, change the price of your monthly rent, or single-handedly fix the economy. As a person who orders take out every evening, something you might be able to do to save money is give yourself a goal of grocery shopping once a week, buying just the essentials, and preparing one meal that will last over multiple days.
If you are stressed about your physical health, you probably can’t remove all of your physical ailments by tomorrow. Perhaps you can set a goal of working out twice a week by watching a free video online or taking a walk around your neighborhood.
If you are stressed about your relationship with a significant other, you likely can’t create a state of peace and harmony every second of every day with that person. You might be able to set aside time to talk through your issues once a week (or a cadence that works for you) and reserve any non urgent conversations until then to prevent daily negative interactions.

**Remember: The goal is not to become stress free. It is to reduce the amount of stressors to the best of your ability (by focusing on what you can control) and to help you respond to the stressors that do arise in a healthier way (by adding small healthy habits into your routine). You do not have to do this alone though.
Ask For Help
The above tips are just quick examples of what you can do, but what if you need more? What if you need a place to process even the things you can’t control?
Over 61% of adults ( indlucing adults in New York City) said those around them expect them to simply get over their stress and nearly half of those people wish they had someone to help them manage it all. If you are in a similar situation, understand that it is brave (not weak) to ask for help.
If you can’t get help from your friends or loved ones, all is not lost. You could also seek therapy. Therapy is a space just for you; you get to determine what to focus on and have a person empathetically listen to you, without judgment. Seeing a therapist could be 45 minutes to an hour per week that you invest in yourself. You can seek guidance on a variety of stressors: from money to health to relationships and more.
