Do you find yourself constantly criticizing yourself, replaying the “ mistakes you made” or doubting yourself and wondering if you are enough? Have you spent hours scrolling and comparing yourself to others? Avoiding self-expression or social situations? Have difficulty accepting compliments because the voice in your head says otherwise? Maybe you find yourself having trouble asking for help, lacking boundaries, or constantly people-pleasing.
If this sounds familiar you may be struggling with your self-esteem. While low self-esteem may show up differently for every individual. Experiencing issues does not only influence how you feel about and treat yourself, it can prevent you from striving and going after what you desire in life.
As Black, Latinx, and People of color, we often struggle with our self-esteem because society and outside factors can disregard our accomplishments, beauty, and worth. In addition to other factors such as
- unmet emotional needs during childhood
- a household where an authority figure was extremely critical
- constant rejection from others
- academic difficulties and struggles

In adulthood (at times) without the proper guidance, such as help from a therapist, low self-esteem can be difficult to challenge and overcome alone. This is why finding a therapist in your area such as New York or Brooklyn, NY, who specializes in self-esteem to collaborate with you can be extremely beneficial. They can help explore and identify the root cause of these unhelpful thinking patterns to best build/improve how you think of yourself.
If you are unsure of your level of self-esteem, the Rosenbarge Self-esteem Scales can help.

Here are a few Tips on how to improve your self-esteem:
Challenge/reframe your negative thinking- Look for evidence that is contrary to your negative thoughts. Ask yourself what could happen if I change my thinking or what will happen if I keep telling myself the same thoughts? How would that make me feel or what advice would I give a family member or a friend if they were in my position?
Assess things you are good at and have accomplished- identify what your strengths are and keep records of what you do well daily, and celebrate its success by giving yourself credit and praise toward those achievements.

Practice Self-compassion– Be kind and forgive yourself by accepting who you are and your imperfections such as understanding that you are human and make mistakes once in a while. Furthermore, treat yourself in the way you would emotionally, mentally, and physically treat or show up for your family members/friends when they fail or make mistakes.
Spend time and surround yourself with accepting, supportive people who appreciate you- individuals you surround yourself with play a major role in your mental health such as your emotions, self-esteem, and confidence. When you struggle with self-esteem issues you may move toward individuals who don’t appreciate you. Ask yourself, what would happen if I don’t spend time with people who don’t appreciate me and surround myself with a community that appreciates me? Hence, establish relationships with people who embrace your true self, make you feel good about yourself, and don’t bring you down.
Participate in self-care routine- identify and implement activities that you enjoy, help you to relax, and reduce stress. For example, meditation, riding a bike in nature, taking a hot bath with candle lights, listening to positive songs, writing/drawing, seeing a movie, and playing with a pet.

Maya Angelou once said, “If I am not good to myself, how can I expect anyone else to be good to me?”
