Are you looking for a new type of therapy to try?

Perhaps what you’ve tried so far hasn’t been successful, or you’re ready to move on to something else. Or maybe you are new to therapy overall and looking for information on what’s out there.

Well, you’ve come to the right place. Let me introduce you to schema therapy. Research has shown that this kind of therapy can be effective for various issues people present with.

Before you dive into the world of schema therapy, there are a few things that would be helpful to know. Here are some tips:

1. Familiarize yourself with high-level background information.

According to the American Psychological Association’s dictionary of psychology, a schema is, “an outlook or assumption that an individual has of the self, others, or the world that endures despite objective reality. For example, “I am a damaged person” and “Anyone I trust will eventually hurt me” are negative schemas that may result from negative experiences in early childhood.”

The main phases of schema therapy are usually (1) Assessment & Education and (2) Change. The first phase involves identifying which schemas are prevalent in a person’s life, where they stem from, and how they manifest. The next phase focuses on challenging and changing these schemas so that the person can develop healthier ways of viewing the world.

2. Keep an open mind.

You are likely to find out that you subconsciously subscribe to one or more of these 18 maladaptive schemas. Prepare yourself to uncover things about yourself that you did not know and may not initially agree with. Keep in mind that the therapist is there to help you, so it will behoove you to at least be open to their observations and the results of any assessments they do.

3. Be honest with your therapist and embrace the uncomfortable.

You are highly unlikely to benefit from schema therapy if you sugarcoat or hide things from your therapist during the assessment process. It’s okay if you uncover some things you are not particularly proud of; your therapist is ethically bound by confidentiality, with only a few exceptions, so he/they/she is highly likely to keep what you say between the two of you.

Sit with the discomfort you may feel during your self-discovery journey. There is room for growth outside of your comfort zone. Remember that the therapist is there to help you process any emotions that arise.

4. Be patient with yourself and the process.

It can be tempting to want to rush into solutioning. Remember that the first phase is about assessment and developing an awareness of your schemas. There is so much to learn about how your schemas developed, how they currently manifest in your life, and more before you can effectively move to the change phase. Keep in mind that the goal is sustainable change, which is likely to take quite a bit of time. Also, healing isn’t linear; there will probably be steps forward and backward. Strive for progress, not perfection.
